About the show

“Meant to be a laugh isn’t it? I thought? Sort of, comedy team names, we’re called ‘barely athletic’, nothing too, just, banter, jumpers for, for goalposts. Six weeks, four teams, play each other twice. Sunday afternoon fun.”

A heart-warming comedy following a mostly LGBT five-a-side football team’s bid to win the league.

The pub league, that is. Viv, Barely Athletic’s head coach, is desperate to win. But Geoff wants to be performing on the main stage at Hull Pride, Luke is shy, Danny has a secret, and Joe is grieving the loss of his wife.

Six weeks. Five players. Game on.

About the writer, Tom Wells

Tom Wells is a playwright whose work includes: Big Big Sky(Hampstead Theatre, 2021); Stuff (National Theatre Connections Festival, 2019); Drip, with music composed by Matthew Robins (Boundless Theatre, 2017/8); Broken Biscuits(Live Theatre/Paines Plough UK tour, 2016); Folk (Birmingham Rep & tour, 2016); Jumpers for Goalposts (Watford Palace Theatre, 2013); The Kitchen Sink (Bush Theatre, 2011) and Me, As A Penguin (Arcola Theatre, 2010).

About the director, Piers Black

Piers is Artistic Director of Manchester-based company, Ransack Theatre. He trained on the National Theatre Directors’ Course, and was Resident Director at the Almeida Theatre. He is recipient of the John Fernald Award, BBC Alfred Bradley Bursary Award, and JMK Assistant Director Bursary.

As Director, theatre includes: Catching Comets (Pleasance London and Edinburgh, Royal Exchange and Theatr Clwyd), Crops (The Yard, Live Drafts), Love and Money (ALRA), Minus Touch (Royal Exchange); Moth (Hope Mill Theatre); The Dumb Waiter (Site Specific - Lucy Davis Vaults, NSDF and HOME); Solve (Edinburgh Fringe).
