Nancy Meckler is an acclaimed theatre and film director with a distinguished career spanning decades. Originally from Long Island, she trained in classical acting at LAMDA before co-founding Freehold in 1969, a pioneering London theatre company. As the first woman to direct at the National Theatre, she helmed productions like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and served as Artistic Director of Shared Experience for 22 years. Her freelance work includes directing for prestigious venues such as the RSC, NT, Hampstead, Royal Court, West End, Broadway, and Shakespeare’s Globe.
She has also made significant contributions to new writing, collaborating with writers like Sam Shepard and Helen Edmundson on acclaimed productions worldwide. Meckler has directed award-winning feature films for Film4 and created celebrated ballets with Scottish Ballet and others, earning accolades such as the Southbank Award for Outstanding Dance. Today, she continues to teach and collaborate on artistic projects globally.
